SECaps: A Sequence Enhanced Capsule Model for Charge Prediction

Automatic charge prediction aims to predict appropriate final charges according to the fact descriptions for a given criminal case. Automatic charge prediction plays a critical role in assisting judges and lawyers to improve the efficiency of legal decisions, and thus has received much attention. Nevertheless, most existing works on automatic charge prediction perform adequately on high-frequency charges but are not yet capable of predicting few-shot charges with limited cases. In this paper, we propose a Sequence Enhanced Capsule model, dubbed as SECaps model, to relieve this problem. Specifically, following the work of capsule networks, we propose the seq-caps layer, which considers sequence information and spatial information of legal texts simultaneously. Then we design a attention residual unit, which provides auxiliary information for charge prediction. In addition, our SECaps model introduces focal loss, which relieves the problem of imbalanced charges. Comparing the state-of-the-art methods, our SECaps model obtains 4.5% and 6.4% absolutely considerable improvements under Macro F1 in Criminal-S and Criminal-L respectively. The experimental results consistently demonstrate the superiorities and competitiveness of our proposed model.Comment: 13 pages, 3figures, 5 table

The role of endoscopic ultrasonography in the management of cystic lesions of the pancreas

Objective. To review the role of endoscopic ultrasonography in the management of cystic lesions of the pancreas. Data sources. MEDLINE literature search (1998-2003). Study selection. Key words for the literature search were 'endoscopic ultrasonography', 'pancreas', 'pseudocyst', and 'cystic tumor'. Data extraction. All relevant studies were reviewed. Data synthesis. In the management of cystic lesions of the pancreas, endoscopic ultrasonography appears to be superior to percutaneous ultrasonography, computed tomography, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, because it can achieve detailed imaging of both the pancreatic parenchymal tissue and the ductal anatomy simultaneously with a high-frequency ultrasound examination at a close proximity. Endoscopic ultrasonography can differentiate benign pseudocysts or benign cystic lesions from malignant neoplasms of the pancreas; the distinction is crucial in the surgical treatment of the patients. The diagnostic accuracy can be further enhanced with endoscopic ultrasonography-guided fine-needle aspiration of the cystic fluid to detect tumour markers and cytological examination. Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided aspiration with or without endoscopic cystogastrostomy or cystoduodenostomy has become the treatment of choice for patients with pancreatic pseudocysts. The procedure is associated with decreased morbidity and mortality when compared with open surgery. Conclusion. Endoscopic ultrasonography appears to be a useful tool in the management of cystic lesions of the pancreas.published_or_final_versio

Objective. To review the outcome for Hong Kong residents undergoing cadaveric liver transplantation in mainland China. Design. Retrospective study. Setting. Liver Transplant Centre, university teaching hospital, Hong Kong. Subjects and methods. A retrospective review of medical records was undertaken for patients at Queen Mary Hospital who underwent cadaveric liver transplantation in China between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 2001. Results. Fifteen patients from Queen Mary Hospital underwent cadaveric liver transplantation in China during the study period. Eleven were men and four were women. Their mean age was 51 years. Disease indications included hepatitis B-related liver cirrhosis (n=7), hepatitis B-related liver cirrhosis with hepatocellular carcinoma (n=5), hepatitis C-related liver cirrhosis (n=1), hepatitis C-related liver cirrhosis with hepatocellular carcinoma (n=1), and polycystic liver and kidney disease (n=1). Nine patients were already waiting for liver transplantation at Queen Mary Hospital, and two of the nine patients were on the 'urgent' list. The overall survival rate was 80.0% at 6 months and 73.3% at 12 months. There were four (27%) deaths, two of which occurred in China. Of the 11 surviving patients, nine (82%) developed complications. Nineteen complications were seen in the 13 patients who were managed in Hong Kong following their return from China. Infective and biliary complications accounted for 58% and 26% of complications, respectively. Major complications necessitated prolonged hospitalisation for four patients and two required further laparotomy. Conclusion. Although cadaveric liver transplantation in China is an option for Hong Kong residents, patients and clinicians should be aware of the possible outcomes and resource implications.published_or_final_versio

Combined Effect of Vorinostat and Grape Seed Proanthocyanidins on Modulation of Thymidine Phosphorylase in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer

    Get PDF
Purpose: To demonstrate the effect of histone deacetylase-inhibitor, vorinostat, on antitumour activity of grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPs) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. Methods: Expression of thymidine phosphorlase (TP) and thymidylate synthase (TS) was measured by real-time PCR and western blotting. TP knockdown was performed using specific small interfering RNA. Antitumour activity of combination of vorinostat and GSPs was assessed according to Chou and Talay method and by evaluating apoptosis. Results: Vorinostat treatment led to a significant increase in TP expression but decrease in TS expression in NSCLC cells. In H157 cells, increase in the concentration of vorinostat from 0.34 to 0.4 μM increased TP expression 3- to 6-fold. In H1299 cells, there was 7-fold reduction of TS transcript and 30-fold increase of TP transcript at 48 h. Vorinostat, when used in combination with GSPs, resulted in a synergistic anti-proliferative effect and increased apoptotic cell death. However, cells with TP knockdown did not exhibit vorinostat- and GSPs-mediated anti-proliferative effect and apoptotic cell death. Conclusion: The combination of vorinostat and GSPs can be an effective and innovative antitumour therapy for the treatment of NSCLC.Keywords: Histone deacetylase-inhibitor, Synergism, Apoptosis, Antitumo

Fabrication and electrical characterization of MONOS memory with novel high-κ gate stack

    Get PDF
A novel high-κ gate stack structure with HfON/SiO 2 as dual tunneling layer (DTL), AIN as charge storage layer (CSL) and HfAIO as blocking layer (BL) is proposed to prepare the charge-trapping type of MONOS non-volatile memory device by employing in-situ sputtering method. The memory window, program/erase and retention properties are investigated and compared with similar gate stack structure with Si 3N 4/SiO 2 as DTL, HfO 2 as CSL and Al 2O 3 as BL. Results show a large memory window of 3.55 V at PIE voltage of +8 V/-I5 V, high program/erase speed and good retention characteristic can be achieved using the novel Au/ HfAIO/AIN/(HfON/SiO 2)/Si gate stack structure. The main mechanisms lie in the enhanced electron injection through the high-κ HfON/SiO 2 DTL, high trapping efficiency of the high-κ AIN material and effective blocking role of the high-κ HfAIO BL. ©2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe IEEE International Conference on Electron Devices and Solid-State Circuits (EDSSC) 2009, Xi'an, China, 25-27 December 2009. Living donor liver transplantation without the use of blood products.

We report on two patients who presented with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma complicating hepatitis B liver cirrhosis. After evaluation, both patients were accepted for liver transplantation. Being aware of the scarce availability of cadaveric liver grafts and the long waiting time, family members volunteered to be donors for the two patients. Living donor liver transplantation using right lobe liver grafts, including the middle hepatic vein, was subsequently performed without the use of blood products in both the donors and recipients. All involved recovered uneventfully from their respective operations.published_or_final_versio
